Your core is a full stabilising system — the abs, the obliques, the deep transverse abdominis, the muscles running along your spine, even your pelvic floor and diaphragm. Together, they form a kind of corset around your spine and pelvis. Their job isn't to move you. It's to hold everything steady while your arms and legs do the work.

Here's the part that surprised us. A 2025 study found that people with lower back pain actually had more core endurance on a plank test than people without it.
