Why Wearing Supportive Shoes Matters

Footwear plays a bigger role in your health than many people realise.

Your feet are the foundation of your body. When they are unsupported, the effects can travel upwards — influencing ankle stability, knee alignment, hip mechanics and even lower back comfort.

What Happens Without Support?

Unsupportive or worn-out shoes can contribute to:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles pain

  • Knee discomfort

  • Shin splints

  • Hip tightness

  • Lower back pain

This is particularly important if you:

  • Stand for long periods

  • Walk frequently

  • Exercise regularly

  • Have flat or highly arched feet

What Makes a Shoe Supportive?

A supportive shoe should:

  • Provide appropriate arch support

  • Have a stable heel counter

  • Offer cushioning appropriate to your activity

  • Fit correctly (length and width)

That said, footwear needs vary between individuals. What works for one person may not work for another.

If you are experiencing recurring lower limb or back discomfort, your footwear may be a contributing factor.

At Wimborne Wellness Centre, we assess biomechanics as part of your overall functional picture — not just the site of pain.
